my new song

i watched the movie little fish again the other night (justin nguyen = major hunk) and the song flame trees was sort of the theme. i fell in love with the song which was sung by a choir of kids and i just had to have it. turns out it's by cold chisel, go figure, but it's a really nice song. cold chisel is not my fave band but you know. i like khe sahn too but don't tell anyone. i'm going to try to clean today as i didn't get much done yesterday. i did get into the market which was great although i couldn't find a bbq thingy. the best part was lunch, i found a stall that was selling malaysian satay. omg it was fantastic, i can only hope that when i get something to cook them on mine taste half as good. it took me back to you know where. :)

i'm pissed

ok, midly annoyed. the pic doesn't look it does it? for the second friday evening in a row i tried to get into the city. bloody traffic was backed up to north adelaide. so once again i went home. took ages. there was cricket or something on at the oval so that made things even slower. all i want to do is go to the market and get a hibachi. remember them? i've been cooking up a storm and it's great that you can get everything authentic at the asian supermarkets these days. nasi still doesn't quite taste the same but i'm getting there.

i'm doing christmas cards. i can't believe it's nearly christmas. i've started to get gifts. my daughter wants a wok of all things. if you knew my daughter you'd find this as amazing as i do. she's working lates so i haven't spoken to her for a week or so. i hope to see the kids tomorrow. you should see their christmas list. they must think nana is made of money. :)

well it's the weekend so have a good one

black sticky rice pudding - yum

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup black glutinous rice ¾ cup white glutinous rice 2 pandan leaves 5 cups water ½ cup palm sugar syrup 1½ cup freshly squeezed thick coconut milk
PREPARATION: 1. Rinse both lots of rice well for 2 minutes under running water. Drain 2. Put 5 cups water, both lots of rice and pandan leaf into heavy stockpot. Simmer over medium heat approximately 40 minutes. 3. Add palm sugar syrup and continue to cook until most liquid has evaporated. Season with a pinch of salt. Remove from heat and allow cooling. 4. Serve at room temperature, topped with freshly squeezed coconut milk.
Helpful hints: As fresh coconut milk turns rancid fairly quickly, a pinch of salt is usually added to the milk to help preserve it for few hours. A more effective alternative is to cook the coconut milk with 1 teaspoon of cornstarch diluted in a little water: heat gently, stirring constantly for a couple of minutes. This coconut sauce will keep overnight. Milk made from instant powdered coconut will not turn rancid, although the flavor is not as good as fresh coconut milk.

it's ok

i think this is it. looks the same but not sure.

i've lost my colour

background colour that is. i've been trying to change my photos since i got back but blogger has been fighting me all the way. that's ok. one at a time. then the other day i thought i'd change the background colour. big mistake as now i can't get the original one back. this blue isn't too bad but it doesn't seem to match. btw, i love mandy's new page colour. pink is good. speaking of blogger and it being difficult i can't put an image on this post. oh well, i didn't really want to anyway. when i press the add image button i just get a plonky noise. plonkers. lol

cravings

i am in the mood to cook indonesian food. it's pretty normal when i get back from bali. when there i eat at street stalls and local warungs. lots of nasi (cooked rice) and mei (noodles). now i have cravings. i miss those gorgeous flavours. my friend took me to a warung that i could not eat at. it was dark and very dirty and when my friend ordered squid they went to an old esky behind me and proceeded to cut it up on a cement slab over the drain then cook it using the dirtiest oil imaginable. ok, it looked ok but it turned my tum and i just couldn't go there. i don't eat seafood but love fish. my friend’s sister cooks me a whole snapper with a coating that is indescribable, so spicy and delicious. their chickens are quite small. most fruit and veg. are too. cute little pineapples that are so sweet and tasty. oh, i have the cravings bad. i suppose a visit to pondok bali is in order, it's a balinese restaurant in adelaide that has food to die for. absolutely delish. anyway, back to my cooking. i got an indonesian cookbook and i'm ready to go. wish me luck.

i'm back

http://picasaweb.google.com/princessyevisha/BaliOctober2008 this is a link to some photos i took. click on 'slideshow' when it loads. enjoy.
well i'm back. i had the best time of course and did lots of things and saw lots of things i've not done/seen before. i met some lovely people and had a ball. i'm a bit tired and emotional still but ok. the kids came over tonight for hugs, presents and pizza. i missed them terribly. i had a dream flight from bali to perth and sat next to a vet who is working on the orangutan project in borneo. only $55 per year to sponsor one. http://www.orangutan.org.au/ i had a lovely chat with him and got through customs etc in perth quickly and effortlessly. i spent way too much money of course and i was absolutely knocked out by the news that obama is now pres. of the usa. a black man president, that's amazing. wow, maybe a woman next time? the monsters in bali haven't been put to death as i type but it won't be long. shooting is way too good for them but what can you do? it's better than keeping them in jail and treating them like bloody heroes.
i have had an unwanted visitor whilst i've been living it up in bali. a mouse!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm absolutely terrified of the little horrors and have spent most of the day disinfecting things. baits have been laid and i'm hopeful that this was a one of (should this be off?) incident and the culprit was working alone and now that i'm home will go away and leave me alone. i live in hope.
